Swim Lesson Curriculum

Level I:

Students will (1) become comfortable entering and exiting the water safely without assistance, (2) practice putting their face under water while holding their breathe, (3) learn to exhale under water and inhale above in a repeated set, (4) float horizontally on both the front and back independently for 4 seconds or more, (5) move from a standing position to a floating position without assistance, (6) flutter kick holding the side of the pool, (7) kick on front and back while assisted, (8) kick across the width (short side) of the pool using the kickboard independently, (9) demonstrate arm movement for forward crawl while being assisted by the instructor, (10) glide on front and back from the side of the pool to the instructor in torpedo position, (11) tread water for 3 to 4 seconds, (12) jump in to the pool feet first from the side and return safely to the wall.

 

Level II:

Students will (1) review skills learned in level I, (2) make forward movement in the water while floating and kicking on both the front and the back, without assistant from an instructor or a kickboard, (3) make forward progress in the water while kicking and rotary breathing on the front, (4) make forward progress through the water while kicking, breathing and performing the front crawl arm movements, (5) make forward progress through the water while kicking on the back and performing the backstroke arm movements, (6) kick across the width of the pool with a whip kick on the back, (7) make forward progress through the water while performing the elementary backstroke arm movements and the whip kick, (8) perform the elementary backstroke with the correct sequence and timing, (9) tread water for 20 to 30 seconds, (10) become comfortable and knowledgeable of dangers in deep water.

 

Level III:

Students will (1) review the skills learned in level II, (2) master the body rotation and sequence of motions involved in performing an efficient front crawl and backstroke, (3) kick across the width of the pool performing the scissors kick, (4) make forward progress through the water by performing the side stroke arm movement and the scissors kick, (5) perform the side stroke in an efficient manner using the correct sequence and timing of stroke movements, (6) practice the breaststroke arm movements while on deck, (7) practice the breaststroke arm pull while flutter kicking, (8) make forward progress through the water while performing the breaststroke arm pull and the whip kick, (9) practice the breaststroke with the correct sequence and timing of the stroke movements, (10) dive for rings in the deep end, (4) tread water for at least 90 seconds.

 

Level IV

Students will (1) review all skills learned in Level III, (2) swim the length of the pool using the front crawl, (3) swim to the side of the pool and return by performing a flip turn, (4) swim the width of the pool using backstroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke and breaststroke, (5) swim to the side of the pool and return using an open turn, (6) swim all strokes in an efficient and timely manner, (7) tread water for at least 120 seconds.
